Enter the pre-tax subtotal
Use the amount for the items or service before tax and tip. If your receipt only shows a tax-inclusive amount, find the subtotal when possible; otherwise the selected tip basis may not match the receipt screen.
Runs in your browser
Enter a bill subtotal, choose a tip rate and tax basis, and see the gratuity and split amount together. This tip calculator keeps the subtotal, tax, tip, full total, and per-person share separate so you can check the assumptions before you pay.

Example result
| Bill subtotal | $84.50 |
|---|---|
| Estimated sales tax | $6.97 |
| Tip calculated on | $84.50 |
| Tip amount | $15.21 |
| Total with tax and tip | $106.68 |
| People splitting the bill | 2 |
Tip = selected tip base × tip rate; total = subtotal + estimated tax + tip.
Per-person amounts are estimates rounded to cents. Per-person amounts are rounded to the nearest cent. A real group may need to assign a one-cent remainder to one person.
The result uses only the values and tip basis shown in the calculator.
Use the amount for the items or service before tax and tip. If your receipt only shows a tax-inclusive amount, find the subtotal when possible; otherwise the selected tip basis may not match the receipt screen.
Enter the rate printed on the receipt or use zero to leave tax out. The calculator estimates tax from the subtotal; it does not look up a city rate or decide which items are taxable.
Use a quick rate or enter another value. Select whether the tip is based on the pre-tax subtotal or subtotal plus estimated sales tax, then compare the resulting tip amount.
Enter the number of people sharing the check and select Calculate tip. Review the total per person and tip per person separately; both are rounded to cents for display.
Keep the receipt amount and the calculation choices visible. Changing one input can change the tip base or the split without changing the others.
| Input | How it is used | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Bill subtotal | The starting amount before the estimated tax and tip are added. | $84.50 from the receipt subtotal |
| Sales tax rate | Estimates tax as subtotal multiplied by the entered percentage. | 8.25% gives about $6.97 on $84.50 |
| Tip percentage | Multiplies the selected tip base by the rate divided by 100. | 18% of $84.50 is $15.21 |
| Tip basis | Chooses the subtotal alone or subtotal plus estimated sales tax as the tip base. | Before tax: $84.50; after tax: $91.47 |
| People splitting the bill | Divides the final amount by an equal number of people. | $106.68 split two ways is about $53.34 each |
These examples show the arithmetic, not a required tipping rate. Enter the amount that matches your receipt and your own choice.
| Subtotal | Tax | Tip choice | People | Estimated result | Action |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| $84.50 | 8.25% | 18% before tax | 2 | $15.21 tip; $106.68 total; about $53.34 each | |
| $63.20 | 0% | 20% before tax | 3 | $12.64 tip; $75.84 total; about $25.28 each | |
| $42.00 | 5% | 15% after tax | 1 | $6.62 tip on $44.10; $50.72 total |
A one-person example shows the tip alone; group examples divide subtotal, estimated tax, and tip evenly.
For a pre-tax tip, tip amount = subtotal × tip rate ÷ 100. For an after-tax tip, tip amount = (subtotal + estimated tax) × tip rate ÷ 100. The selected basis appears in the result panel so you can compare your calculation with a receipt or payment terminal.
The full estimate is subtotal + estimated sales tax + tip amount. The per-person total is that full amount divided by the party size. Every money value is rounded to the nearest cent for display; the tool does not distribute a leftover cent to a particular diner.
For example, with an $84.50 subtotal, 8.25% estimated tax adds about $6.97. At an 18% rate, the pre-tax tip is about $15.21. Using the after-tax base of about $91.47 produces a tip of about $16.46. The calculator shows both the chosen base and the final amount instead of hiding that decision.
There is no single receipt format everywhere. Check whether tax is already included in the amount you entered, whether an automatic gratuity or service charge is listed separately, and which subtotal your group wants to use. Do not add a second tax estimate when the receipt total already includes it.
| Tip basis | Calculation | When it may fit |
|---|---|---|
| Subtotal before tax | subtotal × tip rate | When the tip should be calculated on the pre-tax items amount. |
| Subtotal plus sales tax | (subtotal + estimated tax) × tip rate | When matching a receipt or terminal that calculates the percentage after tax. |
The calculator divides the combined subtotal, estimated tax, and tip by the number of people. It also shows the tip share separately. This is an even split: each person is assigned the same average amount even if diners ordered different items or chose different payment methods.
Each per-person value is rounded to the nearest cent. Some totals do not divide evenly into cents, so the group may need to assign a small remainder. If diners ordered different amounts, use item-level subtotals and agree how to share tax, discounts, service charges, and tip.
Use these boundaries to decide whether an even estimate matches the receipt you are reviewing.
A 0% rate is accepted and returns no gratuity. The result still includes the subtotal and any tax estimate, making it possible to compare the bill without a tip.
If the receipt already includes a service charge, do not count it as a new tip unless that is what you intend. The calculator treats the tip percentage you enter as additional to the subtotal and estimated tax.
An equal split works best when everyone agrees to share the bill evenly. It cannot assign different food, drink, discount, or tax amounts to individual diners.
The bill amount must be between zero and ten million dollars, rates must be from 0% to 100%, and the group size must be a whole number from 1 to 100. Invalid values restore the labeled example instead of leaving an old live result on screen.
This tool performs arithmetic on the numbers you enter. It does not recommend a tip, determine local etiquette, identify a restaurant's service-charge policy, or say whether an automatic gratuity is legally treated as a tip.
Tax is an estimate based on one rate applied to the full subtotal. Real receipts may use different taxable items, tax-inclusive prices, fees, discounts, or multiple rates. Use the receipt's actual tax line when you have it, and set the rate to zero if the amount you enter already includes tax.
The calculator runs locally in your browser and does not submit bill values to CalcBit. The result is an estimate for planning a payment, not a receipt, payroll record, or tax determination.
