I is interest, P is principal, r is the annual percentage rate, and t is time expressed in years.
Final amount
A = P + I
The total amount is the original principal plus the interest earned over the term.
Convert the term
years = months / 12
years = days / 365

When simple interest is the right model
Simple interest is useful when the agreement defines interest on the original principal rather than on a growing balance.
Use this calculator for a quick estimate of a fixed-principal loan, short-term borrowing example, basic savings exercise, or classroom problem. It is especially useful when the rate and term are known and you want to separate the interest charge from the amount returned or repaid. Because the base stays constant, you can explain every result with one multiplication line.
For example, a $10,000 principal at 5% for 3 years produces $500 of interest per year. Multiplying $500 by 3 gives $1,500 of total simple interest, and adding that to the principal gives an $11,500 final amount. The yearly schedule makes the linear pattern visible: the amount of interest added does not grow from one year to the next.
A loan contract may use a different method even when its headline rate looks similar. Fees, payment timing, daily balances, amortization, late charges, prepayment rules, and whether interest is capitalized can all change the actual amount owed. When comparing two offers, do not compare the headline percentage alone. Confirm whether the quoted rate is simple, nominal compound, effective annual, APR, or another contract-specific measure.

Zero rate
At 0%, the interest is zero and the final amount equals the principal. This is a valid comparison case, not an error.
Partial year
A term such as 9 months becomes 0.75 years. The result assumes the annual rate accrues proportionally for that fraction.
Negative rate
A rate between -100% and 0% models a reduction under the formula. Treat it as a scenario only and check the real agreement.
Large rate
The page limits the entered rate to 1,000% to catch accidental inputs. It does not judge whether a real rate is lawful or appropriate.
Large term
The equivalent term is limited to 100 years so a typo cannot create an unreadable schedule or misleadingly large total.
Rounding
The display rounds money to cents, while the calculation keeps the numeric result until formatting. A contract may round daily or per payment.
Accuracy and limitations
The arithmetic is exact for the assumptions entered, but the assumptions may not match a real account or contract.
